2024 Ford Expedition VS.2024 Chevrolet Tahoe

Overview

At Don Johnson's Cumberland Motors in Cumberland, WI, we value trust, in our relationships with each other and our clientele, and in our vehicles. That’s why our dealership is dedicated to the Ford legacy of trust and reliability. As your exclusive Ford destination, we’re excited to introduce the 2024 Ford Expedition, an exceptional SUV renowned for its history, versatility, style, engineering, and durability—but we recognize that Chevrolet also brings these things to the table. Let us show you how the legendary 2024 Ford Expedition matches up against the impressive 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, and why the Expedition was Kelley Blue Book’s Best Buy for a Full-Size SUV. Let us show you why we prefer to be Built Ford Tough.

Ford Expedition vs. Chevrolet Tahoe: Exterior (Trims)

The Chevrolet Tahoe offers 6 trims, while the Expedition has 9, including the supersized MAX variants that add another foot of length to the SUV. Both SUVs have comparable sleek, yet robust exterior features, and both even feature a special Texas Edition. The Ford Expedition XL STX base model and the Tahoe’s LS base both come with standard 18-inch wheels—though the machined-face aluminum on the Expedition makes a bolder statement than the Tahoe’s bright silver. Similar differences follow throughout the lineups, with minimal deviations that are really a matter of taste. The lighting differences stand out, however. The Tahoe’s standard LED head, tail, and daytime running lights come with the option of an illumination package that adds door sill and emblem lighting. The Expedition’s lighting suite is far more thorough with more far advanced options available. LED reflector headlamps with signature lighting, LED fog lamps, configurable LED running lamps, are little details that matter. Above and beyond those is the available Exterior Zone Lighting—4 zones of app-controlled exterior lighting, letting you illuminate any of those zones independently or all at once for superior visibility under any conditions. It’s that attention to detail that makes us proud curators of Ford vehicles.

Power (Engine)

The Expedition and the Tahoe boast formidable powertrains. The Expedition’s EcoBoost® 3.5L engine powers out an impressive 400 hp and 480 lbs.-ft. of torque while the High Output variant churns out 440 hp and a whopping 510 lbs.-ft. of torque. The Tahoe offers the most powertrain options in the segment with three, but none have the power of the EcoBoost®. The standard 5.3L EcoTec outputs 355 hp with 383lbs.-ft. of torque, with the available Turbo-Diesel delivering less horsepower, but a powerful 460 lbs.-ft. of torque, as well as strong fuel economy. The Tahoe’s last option, the 6.2L V8 engine also generates 460 lbs.-ft. of torque with a max 420 hp—strong, but still not as strong as the Expedition. The Expedition leads by a landslide in power, enabling an outstanding towing capacity, acceleration rate, and responsiveness for a well-rounded drive.

Performance

The Chevrolet Tahoe’s first-in-class 4-Corner Ride Adaptive Suspension and the Ford Expedition’s Continuous Controlled Damping with Suspension Road Preview are both top-of-the line systems. The Tahoe’s suspension adjusts ride height to accommodate the road, even when parked, while the Expedition uses a grille-mounted camera to detect and adapt for the road ahead proactively. For the daredevil, the brazen Tahoe RST Performance Edition with unique Police Pursuit Vehicle suspension, chassis, and exhaust delivers 433 hp and 467 lbs.-ft. of torque in style—though it still doesn’t quite reach the horsepower of Ford’s Stealth Edition, with its own brag-worthy sport suspension. For the adventurer, the Expedition outperforms the Tahoe. Towing up to 9,200 lbs. with its 510 lbs.-ft. of torque, as opposed to the Tahoe’s 8,400, the Expedition excels for the hardworking driver. The Ford Expedition Timberline® is specifically built for a challenge, with 10.6 inches of ground clearance, a heavy-duty radiator, premium off-road shocks, and extensive underbody protection. Ford Trail ControlTM is similar to Cruise Control, helping with braking and acceleration on rugged landscapes with your selected speed. This is enhanced by the standard Trail 1-Pedal Drive which applies hydraulic torque brake when you simply let your foot off the gas in low-speed crawling situations. Ford’s Terrain Management SystemTM puts control in your hands with 7 very specific drive modes like Grass, Mud/Ruts, Eco for efficiency, and Sport for fun. Chevy’s answer to the Timberline® is the Tahoe Z71, which, like the Timberline® features electronic stability and traction controls, as well as 4WD systems, but it lacks the precisely-detailed engineering that the Timberline® exhibits. This comparison focuses on but one of the Expedition’s trim levels, with the others all featuring their own distinct, just as awe-inspiring, capabilities.

Interior

Both the Chevy Tahoe and the Ford Expedition max out at over 120 cu. ft. of cargo space, with several configurable options and cargo management solutions. Both feature premium seating materials with available leather trim and 10-way power adjustments with heating and ventilation, with the Expedition Platinum® featuring an additional massage setting. Looking at the top-tier variants, the Chevrolet Tahoe Premier and the Ford Expedition Platinum®, they’re equipped with top-notch infotainment systems. The Tahoe’s 10.2-inch display features Chevrolet Infotainment 3. The Expedition’s much larger 15.5-inch display is equipped with SYNC® 4A. Both feature navigation systems, and in-depth, intuitive app connectivity. While both SUVs offer rear seat entertainment, the Expedition’s comes equipped with Amazon Fire TV. The Expedition’s interior materials are particularly varied and luxurious, like the King Ranch’s® Del Rio leather, the unique Mahogany available on the Limited, and the Timberline’s® orange stitching, carefully crafted to stand out. While both SUVs are comfortable for all passengers and ergonomically designed, the Expedition features more lavish design across the trim lineup, and more passenger-first touches, like ambient lighting and a dual-panel panoramic sunroof.
